Know your FATS! These poor bad boys have been blamed for being the culprit for those extra kilos, shunned upon and even avoided in the diet. Your body needs good dietary fats to function. Bad fats (aka saturated fats) found in most fast foods and processed foods raise blood cholesterol while good fats (monounsaturated and polyunsaturated) are heart healthy as they tend to lower blood cholesterol. There’s also another type of fat – trans fats – which may be the baddest of them all. It provides no known benefits to health, but rather, trans fats elevate the risk of coronary heart disease. The most common industries that use these killer bad boys in their recipes are the snack food, fast food, fried food and baked goods industries. Whenever possible, choose monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats over foods high in saturated fats and steer clear of trans fats. Choose the better options for health!
