Have you ever seen this weed growing in your garden bed? A relative of mine found this growing out of control in the very same barrel where her plump, homegrown strawberries and tomatoes were flourishing (before THIS took over). What is it? This weed goes by the name ‘Stinging Nettle’. It can grow up to 2 metres tall and tends to do so during the warmer seasons before dwindling down during winter. Traditionally, Stinging Nettle has been used as a medicine and food.
When handling Stinging Nettle, it’s important to wear gloves because this weed has many ‘hairs’ that will cause a stinging sensation with human contact! Soaking and cooking in water would solve this problem as it removes the plant’s stinging properties making it safe for consumption.
What can you make with Stinging Nettle? It is much like cooked spinach so whatever you can use spinach for, you can replace with Stinging Nettle. This plant is rich is vitamin A and C, calcium, iron and many other minerals – not bad for a garden weed!
